Overview — Plumbing in Blenheim
A central Blenheim home built in the 1970s had significant corrosion damage to the copper pipework and waste lines in its main bathroom and ensuite, a known consequence of Blenheim's plumbosolvent water supply. The owners were undertaking a full cosmetic renovation and wanted the plumbing completely updated at the same time.
The Challenge
Decades of plumbosolvent water had corroded the original copper pipe fittings, causing pinhole leaks and restricting water flow. Several of the waste connections had also deteriorated, and the original shower base had a non-compliant fall. The renovation needed to be completed within a tight schedule to align with the tiler and cabinet maker's programme.
Our Solution
We stripped out all existing copper supply pipe and replaced it with modern crosslinked polyethylene (PEX), which is not affected by plumbosolvent water and carries a long manufacturer warranty. All waste lines were replaced with current-standard PVC, and a new shower base with correct fall was installed. We coordinated closely with the building team to ensure our work aligned with their schedule and sequence.
The Outcome
The renovation was completed on time, and the owners now have fully compliant, modern plumbing that will last for decades. We also installed a kitchen water filter as part of the same project to address the taste and corrosion concerns from Blenheim's water supply — a recommendation we make to most Blenheim homeowners with older copper pipe.
