Overview — Hot Water in Picton
A Picton family had a 22-year-old low-pressure electric cylinder that had begun showing signs of failure. Rather than replace like-for-like, they wanted to upgrade to a more energy-efficient system. We recommended the Stiebel Eltron WWK 302 heat pump water heater, a market-leading unit with excellent efficiency ratings well-suited to Marlborough's climate.
The Challenge
The original cylinder was in a small hot water cupboard inside the home — unsuitable for a heat pump unit that requires airflow. The installation required relocating the hot water system to the garage and running new insulated copper pipework from the new location to the existing hot water outlets throughout the home.
Our Solution
We installed the Stiebel Eltron WWK 302 in the garage with an adequate air volume, ran new mains pressure pipework throughout the home (replacing the old low-pressure system), and connected a new dedicated electrical circuit of the correct rating. The old cylinder and pipework were removed and disposed of. The entire installation was completed in one day.
The Outcome
The family has been thrilled with the results — consistent mains-pressure hot water throughout the home and a significant reduction in their power bill. Post-installation monitoring showed a 65% reduction in hot water energy consumption compared to the old cylinder.
