Overview — Central Heating in Renwick
A retired couple in Renwick were tired of cold mornings and high power bills from their portable electric heaters. Their 1980s brick veneer home was well-insulated but lacked any form of central heating. We designed a nine-radiator system using a gas boiler as the heat source, with two independently controlled zones — one for the living areas and one for the bedrooms.
The Challenge
The home's internal layout had limited wall space for pipework runs, requiring careful routing to minimise the impact on the existing linings. The clients also wanted minimal visual disruption during installation, as they were living in the home throughout the work.
Our Solution
We planned all pipe runs in advance using the home's plans and a site visit, identifying routes that could be completed with minimal damage to existing linings. Most pipework was run in the roof space and through internal wall cavities. Radiators were specified to suit each room's heat load and positioned for both aesthetic and practical comfort. The installation was phased over four days to keep the disruption manageable.
The Outcome
The couple now enjoy a warm, evenly heated home through winter for the first time in years. The zoned controls mean they heat only the areas in use, and their first full winter with the system saw a significant reduction in overall heating costs compared to the previous combination of portable heaters and heat pumps.
