A new four-bedroom family home in Springlands required a complete hydronic underfloor heating system to deliver consistent warmth across two levels. The project involved designing a four-zone system sized to meet the heat loss calculations for each area of the home, with Stiebel Eltron's heat pump technology as the energy-efficient heat source.
The Challenge
The home's split-level design — with living areas on the lower ground floor and bedrooms on the upper level — required careful zoning to ensure each level could be heated independently. The clients also wanted smart thermostat controls that could be managed remotely, adding an integration layer to the mechanical design.
Our Solution
We designed a four-zone manifold system with separate programmable thermostats for each zone, all connected to a central controller compatible with smartphone management. The in-slab pipe network was installed and pressure-tested before the concrete pour, with zone manifolds positioned in a purpose-built plant room. A Stiebel Eltron heat pump water heater serves as the heat source, providing efficient, year-round heating.
The Outcome
The clients have reported dramatically reduced heating costs compared to their previous home's heat pump air system, with more even and comfortable warmth throughout. The smart controls allow them to pre-heat the home when returning from holidays, and the system has performed reliably through two Marlborough winters.
